Volunteers needed in the Ocala National Forest on June 21
Volunteers will be needed in the Ocala National Forest on June 21 Four Wheel Drive Trail Designation, Ocala National Forest, Florida The Ocala National Forest begins implementation of the Travel Management Rule on July 1, 2008. At this time Off Highway Vehicles will only be permitted on designated roads and trails, or they face a fine. The routes that are designated open need to be mapped and signed well. This project, we includes the purchase the necessary signs and materials to show approved routes on the ground for 81 miles of four wheel drive trails. Volunteers will be used to help install signs. The funding will also produce a map depicting the designated routes. As part of this "rescue effort," we will need dedicated, hard working volunteers who want to make a difference for their sport and the great outdoors. Volunteers will be needed to re-seed, install signage and kiosks, build trail enhancements and do other important tasks. Check each project for volunteer opportunities. If you are interested in volunteering, just send an email to treadlightly@treadlightly.org and we will contact you with times and directions. Ok, I was referred to this site for additional details after talking with Jason (the FL4WDA site admin) ~ http://www.fl4wda.com/forum/YaBB.pl?board=Ocala The related details are in this forum thread. “June 21 Work Day (Putting up signs)” And you should really take a moment to read all of this thread because our club name appears in it “4X4 Trail Designation in Ocala National Forest” More to the point Volunteers for this event will be meeting be meeting Saturday morning June 21st at the intersection of SR40 and FR597 (Pipeline) at 10:00am and can expect to work till at least 3:30pm (weather permitting). You can reach the intersection from SR40, it’s about 5 miles West of Juniper Springs. Anyone that wants to join me in volunteering for this can meet me in Barberville at 8:00am Saturday morning. Barberville is 12 miles North of DeLand on US17 where it crosses SR40. There is an empty lot on one corner where I will wait until 8:30am before heading to the meeting spot and likely taking a short trail ride along the way. I will be monitoring CB channel 4 so give a shout out as you get close. (I’m still trying to figure out how far my CB will receive & transmit.) This could be long day so I recommend you have a full tank of gas, water/snacks for everyone on board and your standard trail ride gear. Things that could help: GPS, Post hole diggers (manual or motorized), shovels & trash bags to collect… you all know how trash bags work. To the best of my knowledge the Mid-Florida Jeep Club is still a member of Florida’s Four Wheel Drive Association. But I do not recall seeing anything official on that this year for our club.

This was an awesome event. There were at least 60 jeeps, few FJS and a handful of Hummers. Several clubs represented Pirates of Moor, Orlando, Lakeland, SunCoast Flatlanders, Hummer, Ocala and probably others. People drove from all of the state to volunteer. Made some new friends with guys from Pirates. I'm really happy to have been part of group trying to keep the forest open. I think the jeeps involved made an strong impact on the forest service rangers that we want to keep the forest open!
