What oil does the NV3550 transmission use?
First I'd like to say take a moment to find and extend your transmission breather tube/hose. I have an 04 and it's very near the top of the bell housing by the firewall and can just be seen with the hood up. If you haven't already done that and find water or contaminated fluid in the transmission you will quickly learn the owners manual only states MOPAR fluid or equivalent and that no standard autoparts store will know the capacity or type of fluid the NV3550 takes. So after checking all the name brand local autoparts stores and a few quick lube places I reluctantly went to the stealer... i mean "The Chrysler Dealer". Oh they have it... in $22.00 a Qt "specially branded" bottles. Reluctantly the parts guy handed me one so I could look at it. There is no reference to a standard oil type or weight on the bottle, only a picture of the transmission with the label "NV3550". oh, and they also could not give me a clear answer on the capacity. So staying true to my years of jeeping on a tight budget and "did it myself" repairs. I slid that $22 Qt of oil back across the counter and went on a quest to find the proper oil and capacity. I found a few random forum entries on the web about this same topic but nothing solid. One site did have a reference to www.amsoil.com and that was my key to unlocking this mystery. I used the "Product Information" tab along the top to find the "Online Product Application Guide" and drilled down to the year and make of my jeep. The NV3550 Manual Transmission takes 4.2 pints of "GLS". GLS is a special gear lube, Mopar part no. 04874464 The AMSOIL equivalent is ~ Synthetic Synchromesh Transmission Fluid (5W-30) . It takes a 2.1 Qts so you will need 3 bottles to fill it to the line. The best part is that the local NAPA has "Synthetic Synchromesh Transmission Fluid (5W-30)" for $10 a Qt. Now keep on Jeepin... after you extend that breather hose to the top of the firewall.
